Lendlease and Tzannes Architects unveil International House Sydney – Australia’s first wooden commercial office building
Located at the Entrance of Barangaroo and developed by Lendlease (www.lendlease.com), International House is set to become a new architectural icon due to its unique design and low carbon construction technique.
It will be the first commercial office building in Australia made entirely from engineered wood, a combination of cross laminated timber (CLT) and glue laminated timber (Glulam) which will be sourced from sustainably managed forests.
The product is manufactured off-site and when put together creates minimal waste. The unique lego-like building technique combined with the sustainably sourced wood creates a finished product with a substantially lower carbon footprint that traditional construction methods.
The building will house 6700 meters of office space over six levels and provide access for 33,000 people per day to the greater Barangaroo precinct.
In a press release Tzannes Architects commented:
The timber structure building will be the first modern commercial enginereered timber building of its size and type in Australia. The building makes extensive use of structural engineered timber and recycled hardwood timber. We have turned the structural limitations imposed by the use of timber to advantage and celebrated them, forming a unique colonnade form evocative of a forest of trees which gives the building its distinctive character.
The result is a poetic and dynamic celebration of the building’s structural resolution, forming the street edge and undercover pedestrian network.
